About Me

  • Humberto A. Cano III, or Bert as he is know by many, was born June 26th 1990 on Clarke Air Force Base in the Philippines. He has lived all over the world in places like Sydney Australia, Ramstein Germany, Honolulu Hawaii, Miami Florida, El Paso Texas and now Boston MA. This being due to his father’s 23 year career in the United States Air Force. At eight years of age he started to take classical guitar lessons. For about two years his skill as a guitarist grew. But surely it was then time to relocate, from Germany to Hawaii.
  • After being classically taught in Germany, Bert was unable to get lessons in Hawaii, and so he put his guitar in his closet, where it would sit for years. One day though he heard the song “One Last Breath” by Creed on the radio and decided that he had to learn that song. So he took his 1/2 sized classical guitar out of his closet, dusted it off and began to play. It was at that moment that he discovered that his fingers did not know what to do or where to go. He had forgotten everything he had been taught. Instead of giving up, he began to teach himself from scratch. He learned the song by ear and started learning more and more. He learned music by many different artists; The Red Hot Chili Peppers, Blink-182, Carlos Santana and J.S. Bach etc. For years he had taught himself as much as could be taught on a 1/2 sized classical guitar, and once again it was time to relocate, this time from Hawaii to Florida.
  • Then on his 13th birthday his father took him to Sam Ash and got him his first full size electric guitar. It was at this point that he decided to get serious with his playing. Immediately he learned all of the songs from Carlos Santana’s Greatest Hits album, and didn’t stop there, he went on to learn songs from the likes of Joe Satriani, Steve Vai, Yngwie Malmsteen, Metallica, Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, Jimmy Eat World, Avenged Sevenfold, Dream Theater, Liquid Tension Experiment, John Petrucci, Michael Jackson and Van Halen just to name a few. During his sophomore year of High School he played his first gig at a Battle of the Bands Contest in his High School’s Gym, performing covers of Stairway to Heaven by Led Zeppelin, Fade to Black by Metallica and War Pigs by Black Sabbath. They did not win but it was a learning experience for Bert. It was now time to relocate yet again, from Miami to El Paso Texas.
  • This would be the final relocation as his father retired from the Air Force due to being diagnosed with cancer. It was at his new High School where he would take a formal music class for the first time. Under the instruction of Osvaldo Medoza Bert’s self taught raw technique would be harnessed and shaped into something great. He quickly became known throughout El Paso as El Dorado High School’s Best Guitarist and went on to receive top ratings at state UIL guitar competitions two years in a row, as well as El Dorado’s award for most excellent Guitar Student, along with academic awards for most excellent AP History, AP English and Architectural Drafting Student during his junior and senior years of High School. It is an ongoing ideal of Bert’s that excellence is a choice and a way of life. With music being such a large part of his life for 10 years, Bert decided to apply to Berklee College of Music. He was afraid at first that he would not get accepted, but to his surprise he was, and on top of being accepted he was awarded a scholarship from Berklee’s North America Scholarship Tour. It was during his first semester at Berklee on October 31st 2008, that his father, the single most influential person in his life, passed away. October 31st 2008 is the day that Bert marks as his rebirth, and now vows to be all that he can be and rise as high as he can in the Music industry. Bert is now currently an eighth semester student who will be graduating in May of 2011 with a degree in Songwriting.
