About Me

Born in San Juan, Puerto Rico, Raquel is a 20 year old vocalist based in Boston, USA. The young talent is set apart by her bright, smooth tone and her innovative and emotional delivery of tunes ranging in style, from jazz to bolero, from soul to pop.

Raquel Alexa started her solo career when her family relocated to the culturally rich city of Berkeley, CA. There, Raquel began studying and performing Jazz through the Berkeley Jazz School and Berkeley High School’s renowned Jazz program. Alexa studied with vocal coaches Gail Dobson and Trelawny Rose while in Berkeley.

Raquel is now a senior at the prestigious Berklee College of Music, where she is studying vocal performance and composition. During her time at Berklee she has studied and explored pop, jazz, latin jazz, flamenco, and Balkan folkloric music. Her teachers have included Lisa Thorson, Becca Stevens, Sofia Rei, and Christiane Karam.

Alexa’s vocal influences include Billie Holiday, Melody Gardot, Concha Buika, Norah Jones, Alison Krauss, Christina Aguilera, Kate McGarry, Esperanza Spalding, Gretchen Parlato, and Becca Stevens. When composing, she draws from artists in the modern Jazz scene, such as Taylor Eigsti, Aaron Parks and Brad Mehldau, and more mainstream groups such as Bon Iver, Little Dragon, Coldplay and Kimbra.

Alexa leads her own group, Amethyst, which performs her original material around Boston. Her compositions can be heard on their EP, ‘Something About Evergreens’. She also performs regularly with the Berklee Balkan Choir. Under the direction of Christiane Karam, the group has performed with Internationally recognized artists including Binka Dobreva, Javier Limon, Zulal Trio, and Mario Frangoulis.
