Although I am still young, one thing that I have really come to understand fully is that knowledge is passed down from one person to another. This is most certainly true in music. There are certain doors that a musician has to go through in order to bring their spirit and music to the next level, and these doors can only be approached with the guidance of someone who has had this experience. I am lucky enough to have been a student of some master musicians who have given me the opportunity to raise my musicianship.
These teachers including, Bill Pierce, George Garzone, Greg Hopkins and Kelly Shepherd, have helped me shape myself as a person and musician. Bill Pierce has helped me to understand the importance of learning the history of music and really getting into the finer points of my instrument. George has led me to discover my own path in music and has encouraged me to develop my own way of playing that is unique to me. Working with Greg Hopkins has really taught me the importance of being a professional. Showing up on time, staying focused during rehearsals, and being prepared are things that some musicians just do not do and I have really been able to refine this part of myself playing in his band. Working with Kelly Shepherd has solidified everything that I have learned from these other teachers. Although I have a strong foundation and appreciation for the history of American music, I do believe that we need to move forward and find the next style to revolutionize jazz and pop music. Hopefully with everything I have learned from these wonderful teachers, I can be a part of this revolution and pass on what I have learned to the generation that follows me.
