I am an aspiring Film and Videogames music composer.
11 years ago, it just hit me. I was watching the movie “Donnie Darko”, from Richard Kelly. The final scene, there’s music with it, “Mad World” by Gary Jules. It was so perfect for this scene that it just hit me: I knew from this day that I wanted to create music for films that could inspire the same emotions that I felt that night.
I played the piano since I was 4. My mother wanted to give me the opportunity by growing old to know how to play an instrument, and so I started to learn music early. She was a piano player too, and she used to play me every night the same piece of Schubert, a sonata in F minor. She gave me her passion for music, and I think that’s why it became very important to me.
After private lessons at home, I’ve done 12 years of classical conservatory in France, where I learned harmony, composition, and piano. I was also in a classical choir as a mezzo-soprano, and sang as vocal backup in a few operas: La Boheme, Tosca, Carmen, La Flute enchantee… But my favorite class was the composition class. I was blooming in it. My first film scoring experience was in 2006, where somebody offered me the opportunity to compose for a silent movie, projected in a film festival during the summer. I had to compose a ten minutes piece for piano and violin, and that was such a rewarding experience, that it just confirmed what I wanted to do in the music industry.
My piano teacher told me about Berklee College of Music and its Film Scoring department, and it became an objective for me. After high school, I attended a Sound
Engineering College where I specialized as Boom Operator. I worked on a few movies and did a few amazing internships. The first one was in an audiovisual production company, where I worked as a sound engineer assistant. My second internship was in France 3 Marseille, a French television channel. I’ve spent a month in postproduction of a TV-movie, spotting music for it and helped editing it with Final Cut and Avid. My last internship was probably the most rewarding for me. I’ve worked 3 months at TF1, which is the #1 television channel in France. I was a boom operator on the field for the news report. I was leaving every day for different part of the country with a journalist and a cameraman, and I learned a lot about my job and about life. After those internships and after receiving a degree in Sound Engineering, I passed the audition for Berklee College of Music and got accepted on Scholarship.
I’m now a full time student at Berklee College of Music, where I’m double majoring in Film Scoring and Music Business, with a dual minor in Scoring for Videogames and Contemporary Conducting. I’ve evolved a lot in 8 semesters. I arrived here with one main goal: doing the film scoring major, and with one main fear: performing (which is weird for a Berklee student, I know). My Film Scoring major is by far what I enjoy the most, but I also discovered a true passion for Conducting (which I would have never expected) and a big interest for Music Business/Management. I’ve been on the board of the Music Business Club since the Fall 2012, and I am now the President of it since Fall 2013. I am also part of the board of the Film Scoring Network, as a coordinator.
I went in New York with the Music Business club during the Fall 2011 to visit some big music companies, like Harry Fox Agency, and it really reinforced my interest for music business. The last two Falls, as part of my duty of being part of the board of the Music Business club, we organized a new trip to NYC to visit different companies, such as William Morris Agency (which I particularly liked), Glassnote Records, CAA, etc… It was truly amazing to organize those trips and to get to visit all those companies.
Last summer, I also got accepted in the New York Internship Program, and got an amazing internship at SESAC.
My internship on the business side of the music industry made me realize that I truly wanted to do Film Scoring as a career. Meanwhile, I am getting involved in as many things as possible to enjoy the Berklee experience as much as I can. I was working two jobs on campus up until this semester: I was a senior peer advisor, and a supervisor at the Admissions Office. I stopped working as a peer advisor because I wanted to have more time to work on outside of school Film Scoring Projects. I am still working as a supervisor at the Admissions Office.
I am tutoring Theory, Ear Training and Piano on my free time. I was part of the Production Team of the Women Musicians Network 15th annual concert (2 years ago), where I was managing one of the performing band. I am currently managing and booking shows for a band called The Lighthearted. I helped the promotion of a bone-marrow donation event on campus a couple of years ago. I went on the Cultural Diversity and Leadership Retreat in the Fall 2011 and it was an amazing
As this is my last year at Berklee, I am trying to get involved in many ways possible to various activities to learn as much as possible before I graduate. I also dedicated some of my time for out-of-school projects, such as scoring students films, or participating in scoring contests. I am very excited to be moving to Los Angeles after I graduate and I can’t wait to start applying all the knowledge I acquired to real projects.
