About Me

Hyunji Kim (Michelle), also known as A s t r o Rh y th m is a twenty-year-old singer from Toronto and South Korea. She is a proud scholarship recipient of Norm Nathan Endowed Scholarship, Berklee College of Music Voice Department Achievement Award, Berklee Achievement Scholarship, Berklee Five Week Summer Program (2008), Bronze Ranker at Kiwani’s Music Festival in Foreign Language Art Songs Category (2009), and Level 9 Certificate holder of Royal Conservatory of Music Canada Voice program.

A classically trained singer with a soaring coloratura voice, a soulful funk, jazz vocalist with a beautiful spin to her timbre, and an aspiring composer is a full-time student at Berklee College of Music, majoring in Voice Performance.

She has performed with many renowned artists such as Grammy Award winning drummer Terri Lyne Carrington, Nona Hendryx (Labelle), Vernon Reed, Nobuo Uematsu; and has recently studied flamenco with her long-time inspiration and multi-Grammy Award winning composer/producer Javier Limón, and has performed with the flamenco great Pepe de Lucía.

Also a 2010 alumnus of Collaborative Arts Project 21 (NYU) Professional Musical Theater Intensive, she has worked closely with distinguished actors and choreographers such as Jan Horvath (Phantom of the Opera, Broadway), Michael Raine (Beauty and the Beast, Broadway; Rent, Japan), Ben Cameron (Wicked, Broadway), Janet Brenner, Aimee Francis, Marshall Keating, Corrie Cooper, Jill Gorrie (AIDA), and Sean Dougherty.

Hyunji (Michelle) is the main vocalist, composer, and a bandleader of her A s t r o Rh y th m Band that she recently formed in January, 2012. She has an infinite interest for cultures, having traveled and lived in many different countries in her childhood, she aims to fuse Korean traditional music with jazz along with other elements of world music to create a colorful mosaic to her sound. She is currently working on her first album which she plans on releasing next year.

Hyunji (Michelle) is always bringing her creativity and spontaneity to the game. She loves being around positive, talented, and open-minded people who inspire her to grow bigger as a person everyday. She believes in the power of intension; and encourages others to believe in their potential.

    The Student Ambassador Program is an honor and volunteer program administered through the Office of Admissions. As a Student Ambassador I have the opportunity to represent the college and share my Berklee experience by participating in Admissions recruitment events.

    I am the founder of A s t r o Rh y th m Band. Jazz/World Music. We are currently working on our first song-- a jazz arrangement of one of my favorite Korean folk song called Spring in My Hometown.

    Flamenco singer in the Flamenco Vocal Ensemble directed by my inspiration/ grammy-winning producer/visiting professor Javier Limon. We will be performing at the Middle Eastern Festival on March 12 at BPC with Christiane Karam's Balkan and Middle Eastern Ensemble. Get ready for this epicness.
