Sırma Munyar is currently a scholarship student at Berklee College of Music, majoring in Contemporary Writing & Production. Born in 1990, she started her musical career officially in 2007, when she became the first winner of the Arif Mardin Fellowship, given by Berklee College of Music for her attendance at the 5-week summer program. In 2008, she was given the opportunity to participate in the Pulawy Jazz Workshop, in Poland, through the Nardis Jazz Vocalists Competition in Istanbul – she was the youngest competitor in the history of the competition. She also attended the Jazz Workshop at Conservatorium van Amsterdam in the summer of 2008. In two years, Sırma gained remarkable attention from the Turkish media, being renowned as the youngest jazz singer in Turkey. By the time she graduated high school, Robert College, she was awarded with the Bülent Ecevit Award for her outstanding musical achievements. In 2009, she was selected by Pepsi as the representative of Turkey to sing on Akon’s latest single as one of the 16 members of the Pepsi World Choir. The song, titled “Oh Africa,” was recorded in Record Plant Recording Studios in Hollywood, CA with Akon, Keri Hilson and the Soweto Gospel Choir. Sırma also appeared in the music video for the single, directed by Gil Green. The video debuted globally at the 2010 Grammy Awards.
Sırma is currently one of the 75 student ambassadors at Berklee. She has been working as a jingle singer for Elec-Trip Records in Istanbul. She is also the current singer of the progressive rock band Helicopria, and is looking forward to her continued success in the future.
