Music chose me at a young age. I always knew I wanted to pursue music whichever way I could- never a single doubt. My household was a musical one. That of Bob Marley, The Beatles, Elivs Presley and Stevie Nicks- the banging of pots and pans with wooden spoons. I picked up my father’s guitar as soon as I could do so physically and began formulating lyrics and melodies independently once I was capable. I took my first music lesson at 7. At age 9, my new guitar teacher was a Berklee graduate. At 9 I decided I would go to Berklee College of Music.
I began performing publicly at 13. The town’s local music shop began holding group ensemble classes and I jumped at the opportunity to sing and perform with others. We played at pubs, restaurants, open mics, holiday parades, town events, fundraisers, parties, radio events, school functions, talent shows and competitions. Independently, I began to create a musical presence within the community, participating in open mics, school assemblies and functions, fundraisers, sports events and showcases. I worked at accompanying myself on guitar and piano and continued to write- planning my future as a songwriter and performer. This was my life until I began my musical and academic journey at Berklee.
I always knew I wanted to be a songwriter. I believe music to be the most valuable and effective means of communication- bypassing all and any language and cultural barriers, whilst appealing to the human condition and connection. My writing style is representative to my authentic self- appealing to social and political issues, the human connection, interpersonal trials and life experiences. Lyrically, Joni Mitchell, Bob Marley, John Lennon and Bob Dylan are my greatest inspirations- speaking their truth through means of song. The Beatles, Fleetwood Mac, Led Zeppelin and Bon Iver inspire me to craft my artistry harmonically as to better explicit my message and intention. It is also important to me to be able to facilitate a similar connection as a vocalist during performance. It is my intention to create art that is thoughtful, honest and humbling, that touches others deeply in a way that music has affected me. As musicians and artists, it is our duty to create and share our gift with others.
